Play a song using a bell ladder to visualize high, middle and low pitches.
Materials
Bell ladder
Detached resonator bells and mallet
Instructions
As you listen to this song, show the high, middle and low notes with your body.
High: touch your head
Middle: put your hands on your hips
Low: touch your knees
Echo-sing the song.
The high notes are sung with the upper part of your voice, like at the top of a ladder. Some find it helpful to sing with a lighter voice to help sing high notes.
The middle notes are sung with the middle part of your voice, like the middle of a ladder.
The low notes are sung with the lower part of your voice, like at the bottom of a ladder. Relax your voice a little for the low notes so that you are careful to sing, not shout.
Sing the entire song with high, middle and low motions.
Display the bell ladder with three detached resonator bells: low C, G and high C. This helps to visualize the low and high intervals. (Note: the song changes key in the middle of the song, so have low D, A, and high D resonator bells ready, also.)
High: place the high C resonator bell at the top of the bell ladder. Play this note when the high notes are sung in the song.
Middle: place the G resonator bell in the middle of the bell ladder. Play this note when the middle notes are sung in the song.
Low: place the low C resonator bell at the bottom of the bell ladder. Play this note when the low notes are sung in the song.
Use the Student Pages (PDF) to also show the high, middle and low pitches on a ladder.
Sing the entire song while choosing volunteers to play the high middle and low notes with the resonator bells on the bell ladder. Repeat as many times as necessary to give everyone a turn.
