Instructions
Teach the song by rote.
Add these actions with one action per beat: clap, snap high, clap, pat legs.
Sing several times with actions. Have students sing with recording.
Using a larger rubber ball, have student bounce the ball to the steady beat.
Next, have student toss ball up on high and bounce to floor on low. The ball action is as follows: catch, toss up, catch, bounce to floor, catch, toss up, catch, bounce to floor.
Sing the first four notes of the song.
Ask students to identify the word sung on the highest note (high) and the word sung on the lowest note (low).
Have students sing the first four notes of the song and show the outline of the melody (high and low) by moving their hand up and down. Repeat until students are able to show the melody line well.
Have students mark the steady beat on the board with four beats per line. Sing the song while patting the steady beat.
Have students tap the rhythm of the words with rhythm sticks.
Ask students which beat(s) has two sounds and which beat(s) has one sound.
(ta ta ta ta / ti-ti ti-ti ta ta)
Under the steady beat marks on the board, ask students to draw the rhythm in stick notation. Have students read and chant the rhythms they drew.
Sing the entire song using rhythm syllables. Sing and play the entire song using rhythm syllables and sticks.
Perform the song by dividing class into a steady beat ball-group and a rhythm stick group. Switch parts, if time permits.
