"My Shot" is a song from the 2015 Broadway musical, Hamilton. This musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who assisted George Washington during the Revolutionary War and also became the new nation's first Treasury Secretary. In the song "My Shot," Hamilton sings about what he expects from his future and from America.

Echo-sing and echo-speak the words: I am not throwing away my shot. I am not throwing away my shot. Hey yo, I'm just like my country, I'm young, scrappy and hungry and I'm not throwing away my shot.
- Display Rhythm Poster #1. Identify the quarter notes and eighth notes. Introduce triplets, if needed. Read using rhythmic language.
- Direct attention to the quarter rest before the word shot. When sung, this rest does not occur every time, so be careful.
- Rhythm Balloons: Give each person a balloon to inflate and tie shut. Hold the balloons gently between your knees. Use chopsticks as drum sticks. Note: one balloon per person.
- Practice playing Rhythm Poster #1 on Rhythm Balloons with chopsticks.
- Play the recording of "My Shot" while drumming the rhythm from this poster. Use the Rhythm Balloons throughout the song for this rhythm.

Rapper Group: Even and uneven rhythms. Echo-speak each rapper's rhythm with words. Focus on the differences between even rhythms and uneven (syncopated) rhythms.
- Find even rhythms, such as rhythms using steady eighth notes or quarter notes. (I'm 'a get a scholarship to King's College.)
- Find uneven rhythms, such as rhythms using an eighth note/quarter note/eighth note syncopation. (The plan is to fan this spark into a flame.)
- Display Rhythm Poster #2 (Rapper 4's part). Identify the quarter notes and eighth notes. Discover any uneven rhythms (syncopation). Read using rhythmic language.
- Practice playing Rhythm Poster #2 on bucket drums with drumsticks.
- For I am the A-L-E-X-A-N-D-E-R We are meant to be a colony that runs independently, so there will be a revolution in this century, make sure the rhythm is precise!

Echo-sing the Whoa section of the music. Open the jaw for the long "o" sound.
- Notice that the first time yeah is sung, it dips down to a low E. The second time it is sung, it ascends to an A#.
- Later in the song, this section is sung in harmony to the rap. The yeah is eliminated and replaced with a spoken Rise up!

Practice the Rise up section of the song.
- The first time it is sung. Sing the interval of B to F# cleanly and accurately on rise up.
- The second time it is spoken/rapped. Echo-speak: When are these colonies gonna rise up? This is partnered with the (sung) Whoa section.
- Is the rhythm of the sung section the same as the spoken section? (no)

Divide into four groups for "My Shot:" Singer group, Rapper group, Rhythm Balloon group and Bucket Drumming group.
- Singer Group: The singer group sings everything that is not spoken/rapped. Work on singing in harmony for I am not throwing away my shot. Also, work on singing independently from the rappers for the Whoa partner section and the Rise up section.
- Rapper Group: The Rapper group contains four rappers who each gets a solo rap in the beginning of the song. Also, practice speaking independently from the singers for the Whoa partner section and the Rise up section.
- Rhythm Balloon Group: The Rhythm Balloon group will play the rhythm for I am not throwing away my shot EVERY time it is sung.
- Bucket Drumming Group: The Bucket Drumming group will play the rhythm for Rapper 4. (This is the section where they spell out ALEXANDER.)

Perform the song as practiced above. Practice multiple times to give everyone a chance to try every group. Have fun with this historic song!
