Instructions
Teach the motions for this traditional holiday song.
Jolly old Saint Nicholas, lean your ear this way: Lean your body to the right.
Don't you tell a single soul what I'm going to say: Wag pointer finger.
Christmas Eve is coming soon; now, you dear old man: Tap pointer finger to wrist.
Whisper what you'll bring to me; tell me if you can: Hold hands around mouth, as if whispering, then nod head three times.
When the clock is striking twelve, when I'm fast asleep: Hold arms straight above head to show midnight, then place two hands together at the side of your head, as if asleep.
Down the chimney, broad and black, with your pack you'll creep: Touch back of hands together, then turn hands around to clasp hands at shoulders, as if holding a sack of toys.
All the stockings you will find hanging in a row: Point outwards from left to right as if showing a row of stockings.
Mine will be the shortest one, you'll be sure to know: Hold your hands spaced apart from top to bottom as if showing the size of your stocking, then nod your head three times.
Bobby wants a pair of skates, Suzy wants a sled. Nellie wants a picture book,
yellow, blue, and red: . Count with your fingers: 1 for Bobby, 2 for Suzy and 3 for Nellie.
Now I think I'll leave to you what to give the rest: Point outwards, as if to St. Nicholas.
Choose for me, dear Santa Claus; you will know the best: Point to self, then nod three times.
Using rhythm charts, practice these rhythms for the song. If desired, start with fun, seasonal syllable templates for Ti-Ti (such as Christ-mas) and Ta (tree).
Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ta: Jol-ly old-St. Nich-o-las
Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ta Rest: Lean-your ear-this way. (Rest)
Distribute jingle bells, sleigh bells and wrist bells to play for the rhythm of the song.
Divide group to perform their jingle bell rhythms on different verses. (Everyone wearing red, play on the first verse. Everyone wearing green, play on the second verse. Etc.)
Perform with voices, motions and instruments in a holiday program.
