While listening to the song, pat the steady beat lightly on your lap. Can you answer these questions?
What instruments do you hear in the beginning of the song? (drums, cymbals, piccolos)
Verse 1: Where did Yankee Doodle go on his pony? (town). What did he call macaroni? (a feather in his cap)
Refrain: What does mind the music and the step mean? (keep the beat in your feet while you march)
Verse 2: What is the name of the captain in the song? (Captain Goodin') Were there a lot of men and boys at the camp? (yes: as thick as hasty pudding)
There are two parts to this song. The A section is the verse and the B section is the refrain. Make two groups and practice the song. Continue until everyone has had a turn to play the instruments.
A (verse): Tap rhythm sticks to the beat.
B (refrain): Play drums and cymbals to the steady beat.
Make a parade! Choose one leader to wave an American flag and lead others around the room. On the A section, stop to sing and tap rhythm sticks. For the B section, march around the room, singing and playing drums and cymbals.
