Create new verses to sing a song with a fast beat. (allegro)
Instructions
Teach the song by rote encouraging the students keep a steady slow beat on their laps.
Define tempo as the speed of the beat.
Discuss the slow speed of a snail. Define largo as a slow tempo.
ASK Can you think of another animal that moves slowly? (snake, turtle...) Invite the students to sing the song inserting the slow animal name and remind the students that the tempo is largo.
ASK Can you think of an animal that moves quickly? (cheetah, tiger...) Define allegro as a fast tempo. Invite the students to sing the song inserting the fast animal names.
Play the game by instructing students to stand in a line holding hands or scarves with you at the head of the line. As the song begins, lead the line into a spiral forming the shell shape of a snail with you in the center. Stop the movement when the spiral is formed. The accompaniment is created so that the song can be sung 8 times. Ask the students what formation was created (a snail shell.) Tell the students that we will now reverse and unwind back to our starting place as we sing the song again.
