ASK Did you hear two different sections — a rhyme section followed by a name section?
Teach the rhyme section by rote, one phrase at a time, then two, and so on until secure.
PREP Invite students to practice a 4-beat hand-jive pattern to accompany both sections, ex.:
clap
clap
pat lap
pat lap
Play the accompaniment. During the introduction, begin the hand-jive that continues throughout. At the rhyme section, all students speak the rhyme. At the name section, give the microphone to a student who calls their first name and then passes it to the next student, and so on.
After the last student has spoken their name, stop the accompaniment and say — And now we have new friends to greet. Students echo — And now we have new friends to greet.
