Five stuffed animal bumblebees (or substitute small yellow craft pom poms)
Instructions
Speak or chant one phrase at a time to learn this poem.
Tap the steady beat as you speak. What other ways can you keep the steady beat? (patting legs, tapping foot, clapping hands)
On the final phrase, "take your wings and fly away," add a flying motion. (Place hands in front, palms facing towards your face. Cross R hand behind L and connect two thumbs. Wiggle fingers and move hands in a circular motion as if flying away.) Can you make a buzzing sound as your hands fly away? Bzzzzzzz!
To introduce high and low, speak the poem in a high voice as if tiny like a bee. Speak again in a low voice like a big bear.
Make a game by chanting the poem as a "bee" or a "bear." Choose a volunteer soloist to lead. The class must guess which voice they heard (high or low).
Tap the steady beat with a drum or rhythm instrument. You can chant the poem in either a high or low voice while playing the steady beat.
Learn the rhythm ("the way the words go") of the song. Speak or chant one phrase at a time, using Ta or Ti-Ti. Try moving to the rhythm of the poem with your feet: walk, jump, fly, etc.
Play a steady beat circle game. Pass five bumblebee stuffed animal(s) around the room on the steady beat. Whoever holds the bee on the word away gets to fly, buzzing, to the "Beehive Band" in the middle of the circle. In the beehive, choose an instrument to keep the steady beat for the rest of the game. Continue playing until everyone who wants a turn gets a turn.
