Explain that our music class includes friends and friends we haven't met yet.
Play recording Jump In! Jump Out! for listening only.
For A, teach the words and motions by rote, one phrase at a time, until secure:
Jump in! Jump out! — jump toward center, then jump back
Turn yourself about — turn around
Introduce yourself — upward palms gesture toward the next student in turn
For B, invite students to practice speaking and echo-speaking classmates' names. Ex. Student - "My name is Kai." Echo - "Your name is Kai."
Play accompaniment (up to 32 names).
For the activity, during A, all speak with motions for students to mirror.
During B, hold a microphone in front of a student. When that student hears Introduce yourself, the response is My name is ________, and all echo Your name is ________. Repeat with next three students.
Continue with groups of four until all students have had a turn.
NOTE If last group of names doesn't equal four, fill in with, for example, your own name or school's name or principal's name, and end the rhyme with Uh huh! Stop the track.
OPTIONAL If time permits, invite students to recite all names in reverse order while passing the microphone back to the starting student.
NOTE Some first graders may be shy to speak their name aloud and may need teacher help. For flexible timing, the rhyme song may be performed without the recording.
